I saw today’s Fixed-it Friday photos posted by John Diaz in a Facebook group about doors and hardware, and I asked if I could post them here as a great “before and after” example.
These doors serving a high school gymnasium had clearly seen better days – they were original to the building.
The new doors have Von Duprin 98 series fire exit hardware with the -2SI option, allowing the outside lever to be locked from within the gym in case of a lockdown.

Looks like 5/0 wide x 7/2 tall opening vs 6/0 x 7/0 The ADA minimum pair opening size. This building is older than 1990. The P.A. Mount Closers are about 5/8″ too high.Arms are scissoring. Looks like you duplicated the same hole pattern locations from the old doors. Most newbies will mesure from the top of the door down to the first hole. No never its from the bottom of the Frame 5/8″ header Stop/Sofit down to the first hole where the P.A. Bracket gets mounted to. Close the door and draw a line on the door where the stop meets the door, open the door & mesure down from that line. I’ve been installing commercial door hardware for over 30 years 1/8″ can make or break a couple of hours or days.
” The new doors have Von Duprin 98F series fire exit hardware” Where are the bottom Rods? Or did you install a Fire Bolt 6″ up on door edges? The old doors had Electromagnetic Fire Door Holders If they want to prop/hold the doors wide open You need to reinstall the Armatures onto the new doors.
Original doors were not paired to match. Your new doors are paired to match plain sliced red oak looks good. Great Job. It’s called Hard-ware because it’s not Easy to order or install….
