Ryan Krakowsky sent me today’s Fixed-it Friday photos of an improper installation of an auxiliary fire pin for less-bottom-rod (LBR) fire exit hardware.  According to the Von Duprin instructions for the pin, the mounting height is 6 inches above the bottom of the door.  This one is just a bit too high!

If you’re not familiar with the purpose of this pin, it is used when vertical rod fire exit hardware is installed without the bottom rod and latch.  The pin projects when heated to approximately 450 degrees, and keeps the doors aligned during a fire.  At that point the doors are no longer required to provide egress – their job is to continue to compartmentalize the building and help deter the spread of smoke and flames.  You can read more about LBR devices in this Decoded article.
