Today’s Fixed-it Friday photo was sent in by a retired AHJ…I’m guessing the panic hardware was an afterthought and at least they tried. Finding panic hardware with an actuating portion that measures half the width of the gate would be quite the challenge!

Would it be possible to field-elongate a VD 55 or 88 bar style device for this application? (Although you might be able to get away with a stock 48″ model of those…)
I was thinking about that too, but the crossbar can’t be switched out with bar stock because of the UL listing of the panic hardware. BUT – I just looked in the Von Duprin price book and it looks like you can get the 55 or 88 series for a 6 foot wide door which should be wide enough to cover half the width of this gate.

Yeah — I was almost thinking you’d buy two and use the crossbar from one as a donor part to splice in to elongate the other. (Can you order the crossbars as a replacement part, even?)
That said, if one was doing this using a specification (instead of limiting themselves to off-the-shelf parts), it doesn’t sound like a challenge for you folks to do a factory special 55 or 88 that’s basically as long as you’d want it, no?
I think we could probably accommodate that request, up to the limit imposed by the UL 305 listing.
