And yes (everyone is asking) – I did say that the maximum hole that can be drilled in a fire door in the field has changed from 1 inch to 2 inches – when allowed by the manufacturer’s listings.  I wrote about that change back in 2018, but I will be writing another post soon.

The Allegion 101 series wraps up this week.  These classes are designed for people who are new to the industry, new to the Allegion family of brands, or just want to learn more about hardware.  Tuesday’s session is:

• 1:00pm – 2:30pm EST: Allegion 101 – Protect the Door: Ives, Zero, and More
  • In this session, we’ll conclude the series by addressing some of the most common hardware used to complete an opening and to protect a door and the opening from everyday wear-and-tear and abuse. From Ives kick plates and armor plates to Zero seals, thresholds, and door bottoms, you’ll learn the basics of these product families, including their model numbers/nomenclature. We will also familiarize you with a few products, such as coordinators and overhead holders and stops, that you are likely to encounter in this wonderfully-detailed world of architectural hardware.

• 12:00pm – 1:00pm: The Essentials of Fire Door Inspections
  • Are you responsible or partially responsible for the integrity of the fire-rated openings at your facility or your customer’s facility? If so, then you probably also have some responsibility to ensure these openings pass an annual fire door inspection. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) first introduced requirements for annual fire door inspections in the 2007 edition of the NFPA 80 Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives. Since the NFPA 80 2013 edition, fire door inspectors are required to examine each fire door assembly for thirteen criteria. Learn what those thirteen criteria are, how to spot them, and ultimately, how to protect life and property by keeping fire doors operating properly. Join Jeff Tock, our End User Training Manager, for this informative session.
• 2:00pm – 3:00pm: Basic Hardware: Keying, Locks and Exit Devices
  • If you are new to the world of door hardware, this session is for you. Gordon Malczewski, our Schlage Training Manager, will address lock functions and their applications and the basics of panic and fire exit hardware. He will also introduce you to key systems.
• 4:00pm – 5:00pm: Introduction to Republic Doors and Frames
  • Republic Doors and Frames joined our Allegion family of brands in 2017. In this session, our Steelcraft and Republic Training Manager, Leon Starks, will introduce you to Republic, one of the founding members of the Steel Door Institute (SDI). Learn about Republic’s two frame series, their profiles, and anchors. Familiarize yourself with Republic doors, including their popular options and models. Leon will also touch on the hardware preparations available for Republic frames and doors. Hope you can join us.
