Ten – YES 10! – years ago, I wrote a post asking what lock function readers recommended for a lactation room or nursing room. In that post I shared a link to the AIA recommendations for lactation/wellness rooms, which have since been updated.
As I mentioned last week, I spent time in 5 airports on my way to and from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in the Gerald Ford International Airport, I saw a really nice example of a nursing room. It is within the women’s restroom, which changes the level of security needed, as the room is not available to just anyone who may be looking for a private space.
The latchset is a Schlage L9000 series with an indicator, so it is unlocked until someone is using the room. Turning the thumbturn changes the indicator to “occupied” and locks the outside lever. The model number for the privacy set with indicator on the outside is L9040 06A 09-544 OS-OCC 626…for a second indicator on the inside (so they know it’s locked), the model number would be L9040 06A 09-544 OS-OCC IS-LOC 626. Thanks to Mark Kuhn for the specification assistance! 🙂

Love this!
We started doing lactation rooms around campus as well the last few years and have been specifying indicator locks where we do not need additional security.
Hi Kathy –
What type of locks do you use when the room needs more security?

I’m with a large healthcare/research entity. We use card reader locks for lactation rooms. Each room may have more than 1 chair. There is a refrigerator to store milk for the day. This approach allows our security team to manage who has access to the rooms.
