Today’s Quick Question is a common one related to entry doors serving hotel rooms and apartments:
Is a UL listing required for auxiliary items like door guards and privacy latches mounted on a 20-minute-rated fire door?
Yes, NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, requires components of a fire door assembly to be labeled, listed, or classified components, which may be listed by different organizations that are acceptable to the AHJ. For example, a door listed by Intertek can typically be installed in a frame listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
From NFPA 80:
4.2.6 Components.
4.2.6.1 A fire door assembly shall consist of components that are separate products incorporated into the assembly and are allowed to have their own subcomponents.
4.2.6.2* Except where restricted by individual published listings, a fire door assembly shall be permitted to consist of the labeled, listed, or classified components of different organizations that are acceptable to the AHJ.
So how do you find out whether a product is listed? You can use UL Product IQ or the Intertek Directory of Building Products to search for a particular product. For example, I searched Ives 484 in UL Product IQ and received the listing details below. As you can see, the Ives door guards and privacy latches (481, 482A&B, and 484) are shown as listed products. This listing also covers accessories like edge guards, protection plates, lock guards, push plates and pulls. For more information, you can click on any of the product numbers or the associated UL category near the bottom left.
