Colin Watson of Allegion sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photo of an application that he and Eddie Dobbins ran across in a public library…mag-locks with deadbolts as the mechanical back-up. YIKES!

Love Colins giddy expression. Its the same look we all get when we find something that Lori will appreciate. thanks for all you do Lori!!
WOW! Is all I can say!
What a crappy and potentially deadly install. The doors are not closed to a 0º. My guess from looking at the photo is that the maglock armatures are extending out too far which means the maglocks weren’t installed properly. Looks like the maglocks needed to be installed using mounting brackets because the frame has insufficient soffit width for proper spacing of the maglock to the door face. Then we have cheap industrial type door pulls mounted onto the existing stainless steel push plates. And, we have the thumb-turn deadbolts… yikes! I don’t see a redundant push-button release for the maglocks either, but maybe it’s there, just out of the image. The only thing worse would be having the deadbolts key-operated instead of thumb-turn.
Things like this need to be reported to the AHJ.
All the things that Ed and Colin run into! Great picture Ed!
Mechanical deadbolts? Surface bolts would be easier to install.
