Paul Timm of Allegion sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photo, taken in a school. This door is clearly marked as an exit, but egress will definitely be a challenge!

……Not to mention the gap at the bottom of the door looks to be about 2-3 inches!!!
Speaking of obstruction/optical course. Is it permitted to have at least the width of the door through that hallway?
If you have a double doors for exiting interior double door with exterior double door does it have to be totally unobstructed or can it be reduced to at least 44 inch wide?
Hi Lindsey –
It depends on how much egress width is required to serve the occupant load of the space but in general it’s not a good idea to obstruct any door even if it’s “extra”. The I-Codes require even all doors to be code-compliant if they are provided for egress purposes, even doors in addition to the number that are required.
