Is this a side entrance? I have often seen this type of modification for the convenience of employee or guest smokers.

Yes, it’s a side entrance to the restaurant area – it would be quite easy to sneak in at night.

I always question the mechanical abilities of those that try to hold the latchbolt back with tape, placing them on my
“do not hire” list.
A piece of cardboard or sheet metal taped over the strike works much better.
You know, tape on the door hardware like this is what brought down Watergate… Just sayin’. The whole political history if the United States started with a piece of tape on a door…
The verb in theater work for temporarily bypassing a latch like that is to “watergate” the door.
