I received this Wordless Wednesday photo from Paul Timm of Allegion, another example of a school district’s efforts to implement a means of locking doors quickly in case of an active shooter situation. But what about other hazards? In addition to potential egress problems, how will school staff and emergency responders get in? And how much force will that chain/hook/eye withstand? This should not be Plan A.

1. I am guessing the thumb latch was added also?
2. Ok, will allow a sign on this door,,,,, Only to indicate if thumblatch is locked or unlocked.
Same sign for the chain!!!!!
I wonder if it’s a classroom deadbolt and the thumb turn can only retract the bolt not throw it. That would explain adding the chain. Or they lost the key and can’t lock it 😉
And let’s not even mention the ADA overhead clearance problem with the lowered closer!
These ‘home-made’ adaptations apparently occur all over and not just in Southeast Ohio which is where I come from. It’s easy for me to criticize since I work as an Architect and specifier, but the public really needs an education about fire safety and egress, and the importance of protected openings.
But that closer installation!!
The real tragedy may be that closer remount after it ripped off. Yikes.
