In last month’s column in USGlass Magazine, I addressed the requirements for electromagnetic locks released by a switch in the door-mounted hardware.  In my current column, I covered another of the special locking arrangements.  Can you answer this question?

When a controlled egress lock is installed in a health care unit where patients require containment for their safety or security, which release methods for egress are required by the model codes?

Under normal operation, controlled egress locks prevent building occupants from exiting freely.  This is intended to help deter elopement in a memory care unit, for example.  Depending on which code or codes have been adopted in a project’s jurisdiction, there are requirements for unlocking the doors to allow egress in an emergency.  If you’re not familiar with the mandates that apply to controlled egress locks, check out the post on the USGlass website!
