During my travels in other countries, I definitely notice a difference in how accessible routes are handled…this ramp in Cali, Colombia was an attempt to improve accessibility. The problem is that the door at the top of the ramp functions and the other door does not, so anyone using the stairs ends up squeezing past the handrail to use the door on the right.

There’s also the fact that there should be additional surface on either side of the handrail (remind me, is it 6″? more?”) that is as the same level and grade as the walking surface, in case someone’s foot (or the tip of someone’s cane if they are blind or low vision) can still find something to land upon even if placed slightly beyond the handrail line. Right? (I know this is overseas, but I’m thinking of the kinds of code standards we would have in the USA if something like this was attempted here)
