This is a true test of who the most loyal readers of iDigHardware are…what is my FAVORITE special template from LCN?? Hint: It’s an ST for the 4020T closer.
To find this answer you have to go aaaaallll the way back to a post from November 2009. I wrote about the 4020T x ST-1895, which is a special template used for doors with rescue hardware. If you’re not familiar with rescue hardware, typically used in health care facilities and doctors’ offices, there’s a video here.
Even though ST-1895 is my favorite ST, I’ve never had a photo of it – until now! I received today’s Fixed-it Friday photos from A.J. Vanhooser of Wannemacher Jensen Architects, and now we can finally see this application in the wild.
With this special template, when the restroom door swings in, the closer functions normally and closes the door. If someone in the restroom falls and blocks the door, the rescue hardware can be used to swing the door out, and the closer arm automatically disengages from the track. When the door is closed, the closer arm reengages.
Cool, right??

Wow what next sliced bread?
Love bringing up stuff we forget about or do not see.
I agree. Very cool. As many years as I’ve been at it, I was never aware of this ST. One thing to make sure people understand is the door cannot be center hung, which in my experience is the most common application for emergency rescue hardware. The last picture shows the offset application well.
That’s a great point! Thanks Andy!

I like that the door is set to the in-swing side of the frame, and not centered. The door swings in 99% of the time, so the latchbolt doesn’t need to drag across that double lip strike EVERY time the door opens and closes.
I agree.
WOW! That IS cool.
