Every time I go backstage in a school auditorium, I see issues with the egress doors. Either the door is obstructed, not readily distinguishable, locked in a non-code-compliant way, or modified to keep the latching quiet. When we are specifying the hardware, there are things we can do to avoid some of these problems. Any ideas about what could have been done differently with this door?

Well it is more than likely a rated door
So, add a camera to see who is messing with the door,,, give them a ticket, suspension, note in their employee file,,, etc
Would not do a magnetic door holder
I assume that the latching of the door could be heard during stage performances, so they applied a flammable strike.
The towel eliminates the noise of latching by preventing it.
After the fire incinerates the towel, the latch is once again free to engage the strike. Fixed-It!
Exactly! If only I had thought of this first, I’d be rich! 🙂

Depending on budget. It’s either suck it up and put in effort during the show to make it close quietly. Or get a QEL Dogging with fire alarm relay and actuate it during the shows, while adjusting the closer’s latching speed. Maybe some stop and soffit mounted seals so it’s less force slammed into the frame itself.
