If you’re a frequent visitor to iDigHardware, you know that I often answer “Quick Questions” sent in by readers. To date, I have posted more than 100 of these questions and answers on the site, and today I have made it easier to revisit them when you need to.
In the right sidebar, there has been a green WW box and a blue FF box, which will take you to the pages for Wordless Wednesday and Fixed-it Friday. I just added an orange QQ box, which links to a list of all of the Quick Questions. This list will continue to grow over time
Here are just a few of the recent QQs – maybe you have wondered about these yourself:
- Can a low energy automatic operator that is certified to BHMA A156.19 be installed on a door that is required to comply with BHMA A156.10?
- How is the required fire rating for apartment entry doors (or any door) determined?
- According to the IBC, can a door with panic hardware or fire exit hardware also have an electromagnetic lock?
- On a pair of non-fire-rated corridor doors in a health care facility, is one automatic flush bolt required for the inactive leaf, or are two bolts required (top and bottom)?
- Can a rectangular or oblong hole be prepped in an existing fire door in the field?
Do you have a Quick Question that has not already been answered on iDigHardware? Leave it in the comment box and I’ll add it to the list!

Hi Lori, and Happy New Year.
I want to request an update on the iDigHardware article on WWYD A17.1. I am working on a large high-rise residential unit building with 48 floors where they have called out in the specification “Emergency Doors in Blind Hoistways. The openings have 90 minuted fire rating. Hardware specification calls for spring hinges, a lockset (storeroom), and no closer. Opening size 3070. I also reviewed your article “Elevator Machine Rooms.” Are there any updates since the articles were written? Our specification is requesting that doors be installed on levels 07,10,13,16,19,22 only. My concern is the correct hardware for Hoistway Hollow Metal Doors & Frames.
On a pair of non-fire-rated corridor doors with exit hardware does the bottom latches have to be installed in a health care facility, if the code only states that it requires positive latching only, would that not be sufficient, we have some suite boundary doors that have to meet corridor requirements,
Hi Terry –
Your question is kinda/sorta related to this post: https://idighardware.com/2022/09/qq-pairs-of-corridor-doors-in-health-care-facilities/, and my answer based on the NFPA staff opinion on the flush bolts would be that top latches on the panic hardware would suffice. I’m not the AHJ but I could make a good argument to support that interpretation.
