Kelly Reese of Allegion sent me today’s Fixed-it Friday photo. I can’t say for sure that this is a fire door assembly, but I’m leaning toward yes. I’ve definitely seen this application on fire doors in gymnasiums before, and this is definitely not acceptable on a fire door assembly. (Remember this post about cladding?)

What’s even the point of this application? Something to do with preventing damage to the door? Using the door as a punching bag?
Hi Eryn –
It’s fairly common in gymnasiums – or at least it used to be when I was a little kid running around with other crazy kids who might have run head-first into the storage room door.

Ah – it looked to me like this was a storage closet with the padding on the inside of the door. So short of locking the crazy kids in the closet, I didn’t see how they could run into the door!
Just a band-aid trying to fix another Architect’s design misadventure!
