The bad news is that on my way to do some training in Minnesota, my flight was delayed and I had an unplanned overnight in Texas. The good news is that I found a good Wordless Wednesday application in the airport.
As you can see, the exit signs are on the pull side of each door. As most of you already know, when a door is serving as a means of egress for 50 people or more (for most occupancy types), the door has to swing in the direction of egress. These doors are swinging in the opposite direction, and the airport’s solution was to post signage on both sides of each door: “Leave open until further notice.” As you can see, one of the pairs is closed, so leaving the doors open to facilitate egress doesn’t seem to be working too well.
What do you think about this “solution”?

Or,,,, The exit signs, on the pull side,,, should not be there???
Sometimes just sticking exit signs all over the place,,, causes trouble.
Obviously the AHJ has given his blessing. Who are we to question?
How about using double egress pairs?
Yes – exactly! 🙂

If you ask me.
Looks like the door frame is installed wrong Inswing VS Outswing.
Or if there is an EXIT sign on the other side of the opening (Push-Side)
Then this should of been a Double Egress Frame RHxRH or LHRxLHR (Both are the same swings)
Doors are being held open by Electronic Hold Open Tracks to release doors in a fire alarm.
Self closing x Self latching.
Looks like there used to be a push button mounted with evidence of the plates covering the J boxes. Possibly updated disregarding code.
I would like to see more context of the images. What is the areas on both sides of the doors? In the first image, it appears that on the other side of the open door, we can see about 1 inch of what may be an EXIT sign, so an EXIT sign on both sides of the door?
This seems like a long-term, but not permanent solution after a renovation/add-on. Hopefully it’s intended to be temporary until they can get double egress doors and frames in.
Looks like they have Sentronic Closers on the Doors, so they will stay open until the Fire Alarm Sounds…. Hopefully…..
Agreed it is confusing that the door operation appears to be in conflict with the signed direction of exit access… Interesting too that the exit signs are flanked by floodlights mounted to illuminate the approach to the marked exit doors.
The “leave open until further notice” signage is likely a “practical solution” to the problem of traversing the opening with motorized equipment. The “until further notice” references – a future citation from the Fire Department of a safety violation.
This type of hold open device is easy to release. So it becomes dangerous as soon as someone décidé to close the door. On the next budget, please rotate the opening 180 dégrees maybe ??
