I recently shared this resource on panic hardware, and there were several suggestions from readers of iDigHardware that resulted in some changes to the infographic. Thanks to all who weighed in – here’s the updated version.

As school administrators and facility managers continue to analyze the security of the exterior doors on their buildings, questions have arisen about panic hardware and how to verify whether it is locked to prevent unauthorized entry from the outside. Allegion has created an infographic to help with this process – click here to download it or visit us.allegion.com/schoolsecurity for additional resources.

I’m going to guess that whoever drew the “latched vs dogged vs locked” sketches is not a hardware person. The sketches show a rim type exit device with the strike used for a mortise type exit device! Now I realize that the “infographic” is aimed at school administrators and facility/building managers who do not know the differences of the various exit device latch bolts and proper strikes, but our level of expertise and instruction should not be diluted, simply because the target audience will not scrutinize the information in such detail.
In my humble opinion, someone with a minimum of hardware experience should have reviewed the sketches before publishing this infographic.
