Fire exit not blocked by drapesI have mentioned this before…it’s great when I receive photos or emails from “door people”, but I absolutely LOVE when family members of iDigHardware readers start weighing in on door issues.

I was at the BHMA banquet the other night, which was held in a small assembly space at the hotel.  The windows all had long drapes, and my coworker’s wife pointed out that the drapes covering the exit had been removed – I’m guessing this was due to a visit from the fire marshal.

According to the IBC and IFC:

Doors in the means of egress shall be readily distinguishable from the adjacent construction and finishes such that the doors are easily recognizable as doors. Mirrors or similar reflecting materials shall not be used on means of egress doors. Means of egress doors shall not be concealed by curtains, drapes, decorations or similar materials.

Egress win!

Yay Linda!  🙂

And for anyone who is looking at the closer “fix”…these homemade fillers were present on every exterior door in the hotel.  They allow the wood frame to accommodate the closer’s parallel arm shoe.
