Today’s Wordless Wednesday photos are from a high school, where this library exit was set up as a security checkpoint for people entering the school. The barrier to prevent the transmission of Covid was attached across the door opening, and a table was placed on the library side for the person checking in the visitors on the other side of the barrier. Although the school is no longer using this procedure, the barrier remains in place.
This is a great illustration of how easy it is to overlook egress and other code requirements when our attention is focused elsewhere. Thank you to Kevin Whitney of Allegion for the photos!

Higher Education,,,
The higher you go, the less common sense is taught???
Even the fire alarm pull station has a Covid cover!!
Ha! At first I could not see the problem. looked a bit closer before I realized the clear covering. Who does this?
Must be an old school. The first thing i saw was the old panic bar and not complaint with ADA, the rods on the lower doors.
Hold on…are traditional “crossbar” panic bars not ADA compliant?
Hi Matt –
I think Joe was referring to the bottom rods and latches. On manually-operated doors, the bottom 10 inches on the push side need to be flush and smooth, with no projecting hardware. There is no prohibition in the model codes with regard to crossbar devices, but the projection of some of the older devices is beyond what is allowed by the accessibility standards.

Quick to go up. Slow to come down.
I think the school needs an overall upgrade. Check the potbelly closers!
