Next week is the door and hardware industry’s virtual conference – DHI conNextions – and there will be dozens of informative education sessions along with a virtual exhibit hall. I’m participating in 3 sessions. The first is a panel discussion on flexibility in the workplace – that’s something I definitely value, as I have been working remotely for 16+ years. This will be a follow-up to our panel discussion at last year’s conference, which was called “Women Opening Doors.” We will be broadening our scope in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential lasting effects on the future workplace for women and for all.
My next session is an update on the 2021 model codes – are you familiar with the upcoming changes? I’ve been working with the BHMA Codes, Government, and Industry Affairs Committee on the last few editions of the codes and standards that we commonly use in our industry. In each code development cycle we have worked on 20-30 proposals, to help reduce the inconsistencies and to make the door-related requirements easier to interpret. The code update presentation at DHI conNextions will be 75 minutes packed with information about changes to the 2018 and 2021 model codes. Questions can be submitted through the chat feature, and I will be answering them in writing for all attendees after the session.
I’m extra-excited about my 3rd session, which is an on-demand viewing of a documentary called 6 Locked Doors. The film is about the 1942 fire at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston, which resulted in 492 fatalities and numerous changes to the life safety codes. This tragedy and others like it have shaped today’s codes and helped to keep building occupants safe in the decades since. Allegion is sponsoring this virtual screening, and you might even win some iDigHardware merch!
