FF: Curved Keyway

Category: Fixed-it Friday,Locks & Keys,VideosLori @ 6:28 am Comments (8)

This cylinder is really cool…a curved keyway and a flexible key.  I didn’t say it was practical.

If you’re curious about how it works, you can check out the patent here.

Thank you for today’s Fixed-it Friday video to 2 of my old pals from the beginning of my career in Winooski, Vermont – Louise Potter and John Huard Sr.  I miss hanging out in the lock shop and warehouse with you!  🙂

Give that poor key some Viagra!

I like the idea of making it harder to pick, plus with the curvature it’s not as thick (deep?), so you could increase the security of things such as cabinets and drawers. Or, upgrade your door locks to these instead of doing an RFID system…

While not necessarily practical for a standard door, I think this is terrific! But, the sliding mechanism needs to be modified…I would stab myself in the hand with the end of the metal guide. Maybe have the head be composed of 2 different pieces of plastic, the outer one is stuck to the top of the guide while the inner one moves.
