Adam Fisk of Allegion sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photo…it’s kind of ironic that someone went to the effort to make a sign for this fire door, which is equipped with zip tie dogging.  While it’s true that fire doors must remain closed, they also need to be latched against the pressures from a fire.  The alternative is to have a latch that is held retracted but projects automatically during a fire…the applicable excerpt from NFPA 80 is below.

NFPA 80 says:  Latching arrangements that do not provide positive latching in the normal mode shall be permitted to be used provided that, in a fire emergency, the door becomes positively latched by means of an automatic fail-safe device that is activated by an automatic fire detector. (See Section 4.7.)
