Today’s Fixed-it Friday photos were taken in a couple of different NYC subway stations – the signs stating “unauthorized use prohibited” have been added in recent years. I know at least one AHJ who doesn’t like signs like this which deter use of the exit, but as far as I know, the codes do not prohibit them. Am I wrong about that? Or should a code change be proposed?

Yes
There should be a code section saying no signs within five feet of a door or exit sign,
Exception : non exit related signs.
Will this door even open??? If you are not an employee?
Have allways struggled with this. To be safe, i use “EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY. ALARM WILL SOUND”. I avoid use of terms that make people think a special o need a key are card to get out. I have never been challanged on this text. And I’ve used it in some tough places.
Looks like an illuminated exit sign would be in order, also.
A better approach would be to have an alarm on the door, key switch bypass for authorized users, and “alarm will sound” signage. Add a camera, too, if worried about who might be exiting here.
I would view the need for emergency egress as an authorized use; some others might not.
You can’t make this stuff up…
