Wow, that central pivot reminds me of some big vault doors in GSA land. Can’t recall if it was Overly or Hamilton who experimented with a balanced door like that.
Speaking of, I might want to ask for clarification:
1. would you consider this as fitting the definition of a “balanced door”?
2. is there any minimum geometric requirement for something to be classified as a “balanced door”? (I’ve heard mention that the pivot point should be at least 1/3 of the way in from the “hinge” side of the door but don’t know if that’s a hard-and-fast rule)
Hi Deviant –
That’s a great question! I wouldn’t consider this door configuration a balanced door – in my mind it’s just a center-pivoted door…not because it pivots at the center but because it is hung on center pivots (I’m assuming). 🙂
A balanced door has a special hanging mechanism, it isn’t hung on center pivots. At least that’s the way I would identify whether a door is a balanced door. There is a video here from CRL that shows the hanging mechanism: https://youtu.be/lfd-IWM04Iw?si=1dZpa7r6H1m4VDGI.
