Mark Ballard of Cook and Boardman sent me today’s Fixed-it Friday photo. As I said to Mark, not too many people would be walking down a hospital corridor and notice this problem. Can you see it?
UPDATE: I didn’t publish the comments because I wanted everyone to have a chance to find the problem. The fact that dozens of you spotted it makes me think that my idea of door-related guided tours would be wildly popular. Wouldn’t that be fun? 😀

Looks like the Rixson magnetic door hold open is installed on the wrong side (push side) instead of pull side. Someone goofed
1/2 set wall mag holder with a door that swings in the opposite direction from it.
Looks like a KD frame. So I’m thinking it used to swing into the corridor with mag holder. they replaced the whole opening, changed it to inswing, and just left the holder on the wall.
Old not used magnetic door holder??
Door swings into room 2blo2
Electromagnetic door holder is located on the push side of the door, not the pull side
My eye is magneticly drawn to it.
Hold open wrong side of door, sex bolts look wrong, cannot think of anything with that pattern, and wired glass.
Door Closer is either not level or has insufficient number of fixings.
magnetic hold open?
What’s the hold open holding? Not the door swinging the other way. With a deadbolt.
Mag holder on the wrong side of door?
The opening has a magnetic door hold open, probably connected to fire alarm system. Also if the magnetic hold open is correct the door swings i instead of out.
Well, if it’s a door into a stair, it shouldn’t have a deadbolt, and the wired glass opening is too big, shouldn’t be more than 100 si for a 90 minute door.
And about that hold open….
Probably should put the magnetic hold open on the swing side.
They failed to install the door hold open hardware on the door itself or provide a long enough extension for it. I would have to see the device specification to determine if it would have enough holding power since it would now be a shear load rather than a perpendicular one. Of course is it does you might have a problem of the 5-6 foot extension jamming when the magnet drops it. 🙂
It might be simpler to move the holder to the correct side of the door.
There is a Mag Holder on the door but the door swings in. I am guessing the door used to swing out.
Magnetic Holder Wall – in the wrong place. The door swings into that opening and wall mount should be on pull side wall.
Electro-magnetic hold open wall mount mounted on push side of door.
Hold open device is on wrong side of door
Mag holder is on the wrong side of the opening.
Wrong swing….Wrong place????
I can’t tell if there are (6) holes near the bottom of the door or if they are just knots in the veneer. In either case, what’s with the magnetic hold open on the wall? 🙂
Whats that wall magnet for? I hope there is one on the other side of the door!
Ha-ha! Ooops.
Silly electricians.
Door swings opposite of the hold open magnet. Not that it matters much for this door but there is nothing on the door to attach to the hold open device.
Mag hold open is on wrong side of the door.
Is this magnetic door holder? Installed opposite to door swinging?
Took me a couple seconds trying to look for an etching on the wired glass. Very funny! Is there a fastener stuck to it to prove it is energized?
The door swings away from the wall magnet. Undoubtedly a remodel project which the door swing was changed. Easier to leave the magnet than patch the dry-wall.
Mag holder on the wrong side of the opening.
Mag holder on the push, not pull side
Door swings in the opposite direction tor for the magnetic holder!
So did someone change the swing of the door and forget to tell sparky? That, and it’s a KD after-drywall frame with a wide door. Not a fan.
Hold Open Magnet is the wrong hand 🙂
Magnetic closer stop on wrong side?
Magnetic hold open is on the wrong side of the door. It will never swing out to this side of the frame.
IF WE ARE REFERRING TO THAT MAGNETIC CATCH THERE, I WISH THERE WAS VIDEO OF THIS DOOR WORKING. THAT WOULD BE ONE HECK OF A MAGIC TRICK ! ;- )
The magnetic holder is on the wrong side of the opening.
The magnetic fire door holder is on the wrong side of the opening.
The magnetic hold open installed on the wrong side of the opening . Nice plans or they changed the door swing .
They will need a long chain to.reach the hold magnet assuming that is what it is. Door also appears to be key locked so they don’t seem to have mastered much if this was intended to be fire rated.
What is the purpose of the hold open device on the wall?
Very lonely magnetic holder
There’s a wall magnet but it can’t be for that door since the door swings the opposite direction. Also appears to be wired glass in the lite kit.
Someone changed the door swing and did not coordinate with the equipment installer
Holder
I see a few problems.
1 – The biggest one is they changed the swing of the original opening from swinging out to swing into the space. They used a knock-down (KD) door frame to accomplish this and it appears to be a large 44″- 48″ wide door. This is not a durable assembly for a busy hospital because the major attachment points on KD door frames are tiny screws at the bottom of the frame legs that (hopefully) screw into (heavy gauge) framing. There is no solid anchor attachment to the floor or to the rest of the wall. The top of the door frame is pressure fitted against the framing with adjustable screws. This leave the caulking (if they use good quality adhesive type) to be the primary method holding 90% of the door frame to the surrounding wall. This assembly may work on an office (standard size) door but it doesn’t hold up well in a heavy use hospital environment where doors can take a hit from heavy carts or beds. It likely won’t take long for this large heavy door to start sagging interfering with the door security and rating compliance.
2 – In changing the swing of the door, I would be curious to see the stop function of this new orientation. Does it swing to an interior wall? Or did they install a pull-side mounted door closer with NO stop function. This happens a lot. Along with the KD door frame, this can kill the life expectancy of the door assembly.
3 – The door closer is install with two, instead of 4 sex-bolts. This is a relatively minor item but is also affects the life span. There’s a reason why manufacturers specify using 4 bolts to attach their closers.
4 – When they changed the swing of the door, they forgot to remove the door hold open magnet on the wall.
5 – The door looks used and maybe that’s why there is still wire glass installed. If this door was pulled from some other location, I would question whether the door rating matches the requirements of this opening.
6 – I’m not sure the bottom of the glass vision lite is at the 43″a.f.f. ADA standard height. It looks a bit high to me, but this could also be a result from reusing an old door.
Reminds me of the picture from the early 80’s of a building with the fire escape stairs on the East side of the building and the doors on the West side.
I hope they weren’t expecting the mag hold open to work on this door.
Mag holdopens don’t do much good if the door swings the wrong way. I’m curious about who got the blame on this one.
Inward opening door with the Emag plate mounted on the wall 🙂
To all of the above it appears there is an open hole in the stop of the frame.
oops!
