A couple of weeks ago I told you that we would be updating the laminated fire door inspection cards and I asked if you had any suggestions. In response to your comments, we changed the length of the card to 11 inches (instead of 12), left some space at the top for your label or seal, and added a note about door clearances. I also updated the information to reference the most current code requirements. The new cards will continue to be laminated, but per your request, you can also print them locally if you’d like – just email me and I will send you the print file.
If you left a comment on the previous post asking for some of the new cards, I’ll have those sent out as soon as the cards are printed and laminated. If you didn’t add your order to the previous post, you can leave it in the reply box below. (I also have a label question for you, so scroll down and see if you know the answer.)

I am thinking 1 1/2 hour at the most?
Plus check to see what door rating is required for a particular situation.
Since the first picture shows a door with fire exit hardware, and the label calls for latch throw 1/2″ for singles, 3/4″ for pairs, I would say that door is not code compliant. I don’t know about the rating for the 2nd door. I’d have to see the plans.

As for the door/frame, it looks like the door was rated similar to the frame. It must have been tested at 20 minute, 45 minute and 90 minute and passed all with the same door construction. The maximum rating of the assembly would be 90 minutes considering that is the max for the door even though the opening may not require a rating that high.

I would have said it has no rating. My understanding of a rated “assembly” is that the door and frame have been tested and certified together, as a unit. Since one part of the door unit has been replaced, presumably the door, it is no longer the product that was tested and certified. I would be happy to hear otherwise, though.
The door is rated up to and including 3 hours. The frame is rated up to and including 1 1/2 hours. If paired together, and assuming the hardware and wall support it, my thought is that the max rating is 1 1/2 hours. The highest rating of the lowest rated component.
The FM-Approved door = 3-hr FRR
The WH-Approved door = 1.5-hr FRR
… scratch that — 1.5-hr is the maximum allowed for the frame FRR. Therefore opening can only be rated for max. 90-min.
I’m on board with 90 min. and agree with Raymond’s thought process.
If I hadn’t asked for any of the updated laminated cards previously, I would like to request 25 of them.

I tend to side with the others who have said 1 1/2 hr. In any case, why would the wording on the labels be all-inclusive–and so confusing to people like me? Is it a Canadian thing? And will you give us the answer?

The frame label is controlled by the door label. The door manufacturer alterations would have to meet a 90 min rating due to the max amount on the frame. Unless plans are provided to prove the wall rating and approval by AHJ.
Lori we can also accept the version to print ourselves, emailing is easier I am sure.

I really dislike non specific/ generic door labels. Makes every ones jobs difficult .. However when faced with labels like this I take the minimum time as the norm.

Without ALL of the FACTS, I would say the doors are capable of 75% of the wall rating.
Please send 50 cards. To expand further, if the wall is rated for 2 hours and the hardware meets all the spec’s then the most the fire door rating can be is 1 1/2 hr.s because the frame is limited to 1 1/2 Hr.

I concur that the lowest rating of any part of an assembly is the max that it can have.
