Sometimes when I’m working on a code question/problem with someone, I use the phrase “it won’t keep me up at night,” meaning that maybe it’s not 100% perfectly code compliant but it’s not so problematic that I will lose sleep worrying about it.
That’s kind of how I feel about this supermarket’s attempt to guide traffic at closing time – the adopted codes would not allow the store entrance to be blocked, but at least the employees didn’t engage the lock on the door. On the other hand, it’s hard to know where to draw the line. If this is permitted, maybe the next method used to deter egress will be more egregious.
What do you think? Would this keep you up at night? Is there a better way for supermarkets to handle this?

My pet peeve!!!
I just have seen too many very blocked and locked exit doors. And especially a grocery store at 9:00 in the morning.
The sliding doors, just turn off the power, but do not lock. They can still be opened.
Put a sign six feet away with a pick arrow pointing to the working exit.
If someone is going to steal, they will. Plus, employees are directed not to stop them.
My local grocery store puts up big bifold signs in front of the “closed” side at night. It doesn’t keep me up all night, but sometimes I have a hard time falling asleep.
Simply turn off the sensor so the doors won’t open if someone approaches. Most are either a toggle or key. That is usually enough deterrent for most reasonable people. The breakaway feature will still allow egress in an emergency.
I think that’s a great idea, Larry!

Lori,
This happens in supermarkets ALL OVER THE COUNTRY!! Unfortunately, I’m not around at 10:00pm to see this. I must rely on the general public to identify this situation, send me a photo and I deal with it the next day!! I usually get “i’m sorry, we won’t do it again”…..until the next time and we start it all over again!!!.
Would the shopping baskets keep you up at night, Kevin?

It is similar to the Toilet door, If they don’t use classroom lock, it may trap the “LAZE” boy or employee, who they sleep or play el. games in Toilet Cubicle. It really rely on the building management, make sure nobody there before they lock the door. Once a time, a lady had not been aware of door been locked, she broke the window and jump to ice from floor 3 or 4.
