As a Firefighter, sent inside during the critical early stages of a fire to search for any trapped occupants…. I think you can see HOW BAD THIS IDEA IS!!!!! People will die if this takes off!!! Worse yet, Firefighters will die when they get into a space and cannot get out because the Dad wanted to “Be Cool”!!!! That deception is not going to save the Firefighter, or his little girl!! I hate to sound so cold but the reality of the time it takes to perform a search in a fire and its potential outcome, is NOT GOOD!! Is there a Code Section that would cover this? I tried looking quickly but came up empty.
That’s a great question, Kevin! For residential construction I have not seen anything that would prevent this type of design, and even if these rooms had normal doors, they could be locked to prevent access. I’m guessing the grandparents’ room and the kid’s room had regular doors in addition to the secret entries, but that mirrored room would be very tough for a firefighter to find.
