Lee Frazier of Allegion sent me today’s Fixed-it Friday photos of doors found in a school. Luckily, this is not a fire door assembly. Maybe my retirement gig will be in door forensics…I have so many questions. 😀

There is little information on color-coded plug fire door identification, especially early 20th century. For example Warnock Hersey used a circular plug which would be both divided like a clock face and color coded. As a.fire inspector I could not find any credible information about this form of identification The ability to source credible reference sources would be of great value historical buildings.
Hi Michael –
This is an old post, but it’s all I’ve got!

Storage room for play props?
They’re the world’s largest dutch doors! They must be for oversize scenery, right?
My favorite is the closer attached to two halves of the left side of the door.
Hi Alanna –
I’m guessing that’s why they’re so tall! 😀

Trojan Horse entrance ;0
You have to love it; what ingenuity. This is so unique, yet very useful for large sets or scenery to pass through it, as Lori suggests, or it is in the home of the tallest man to ever live.
At the Auditorium door my guess is that the owner is using a rolling scaffolding for maintenance (lighting adjustment and lamp replacement). This is similar to the ones that you see at the Big box stores. At the storage room, the tall door would be for tall objects. I think a tall coiling door and separate personal door would be a more functional solution. If esthetics is the concern, then I don’t understand the corridor with fancy finishes, pendant chandeliers but no ceiling – exposed ductwork. You’re correct Lori; this is a fun mystery based on three photos.
Interesting. It appears that these are 4 standard 3070 doors and the upper door of the active leaf was even pre drilled for a lockset, but they plugged it due to it’s position in the frame. Judging by the doors and the hardware, these are not custom doors perse, just regular 3070s (probably as a cost cutting measure.) The frame has to be custom though to a 60140 opening and hardware placement. Interesting application.
No mystery at all. This is common in scenery storage. You’d have large theatre flats and scenery elements that would get moved around vertically, and the upper doors allow them to pass through when needed, but for day to day human traffic you just use the lower doors.
