Thomas Reinhardt sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photo of a door with an egress problem. I can appreciate that someone manufactured a rolling rack for the AC unit and it can be moved out of the way if the exit is needed, but…no.

I thought you could not put vents in a fire rated door??
This is probably an exterior door and is very unlikely to be a fire rated door. The big issue here is that they’ve got an air conditioner sitting on a cart in a rather clearly labeled path of egress. In the event of an emergency, you have to move the air conditioner cart to get through the door.
1. Can I do it in a single operation?
2. Does operation exceed the allowable pressure to open the door?
3. Would it be acceptable if 1 and 2 complied AND it opened in the right direction?
4. How wide a wide-swing hinge will you need to make this operate?
I’m curious where the ventilation for the supposed window (now quasi door) AC unit is… is it’s attached via hose to the door? Otherwise, I’m not sure what the purpose of the AC unit is at all…
Is there a code requirement for the lighted exit sign to be clearly visible from a certain distance away from the door?
I’m not an expert on exit signs, but the IBC requirements are summarized here: https://idighardware.com/2017/02/ff-exit-sign-position/.
