Fire doors in hotels (and other buildings) are critical for helping to deter the spread of smoke and flames during a fire. To perform as designed and tested, the fire door needs to be closed and latched if a fire occurs. John Lozano of Allegion sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photos of a corridor fire door in a hotel. The magnetic holder is a start, because it means that – in theory – the holder will release upon fire alarm and allow the closer to close the door. But it looks like the latch was painted over – purposely or accidentally…such a simple thing that could have a very negative impact. This is why we need annual inspections of fire door assemblies!

Once again I see this all too often . When pointing it out to Management I usually just get the roll of eyes and typical shoulder shrug. My next statement usually shocks them into action when I tell them I can contact the fire inspector and see if they will pass it . Never Fails
I see lots of issues when I inspect fire rated openings and most people do not understand why I am telling them that the issue needs to be fixed. I tell them the other option is that when I document my findings I make it known that they were aware and will claim full responsibility and liability should someone get injured or there is a fatality should an emergency occur and the opening fails to work as required.
