I’m sure there’s some sort of explanation for this, right? Today’s Wordless Wednesday photo was taken at a convention center that is currently being used as a Covid vaccination site.

Construction ? I do not think it would be and Infection control ICRA. i do not see an exit sign above the door. But if I see exit devices I see and think exit.
Ops i see them now.
I am sure it is to keep folks from cutting in line and ruining the flow of foot traffic. Obviously not compliant, but effective…
Classic – the rush to “handle the emergency” negates the need to continue to provide safe, un-restricted access to an exit.
It is so sad to see the immediate emergency as an excuse to reduce safety in the face of a security “emergency”.
We must do better than this.
Broken glass? The plastic seems to be bowing out.
They’re probably limiting how many people can be in there at once and with definite traffic patterns, so it’s possible (based on distance to exits, crowd size, etc) that these exists are not needed. However, if that’s the case, they REALLY should have covered or turned off power to those exit signs. Otherwise, I hope that stuff is no stronger than rice paper. With smoke or loss of normal lighting, all people are going to see are the exit signs.
I don’t see this being as much of a problem as it appears. Huge number of exits in an arena concourse designed for a very large number of people. I am sure that there are many people there, but way below the capacity of the venue. They need to control crowd traffic and security. There may be a violation of the rules for the design of the venue, but hopefully they have thought out traffic control for the limited number of people that are on site for vaccination. A few hundred people don’t need to be let into areas of the building that are off limits, and extra doors to the outside would make the area fall into total chaos if people started coming in at the wrong place in the lines.
Does it matter that the building is operating at very low capacity or do exits always have to assume regular numbers of people?
Hi Sandy –
That would be up to the AHJ.

Hopefully they got approval first and it has something to do with current, temporary maximum occupancy level.
