Ok…I’ve still got work to do, but this text message from my college sophomore (a resident assistant at UTK) left me wordless. There were plenty of times over the years when my kids reluctantly tolerated my “teachable moments” about life safety. I’m so happy to know that some of it stuck! I hope you are talking to your family and friends about doors! 🙂

Proud MOM!! Great job!
WOW LORI, YOU MUST BE SO PROUD!
I BET SHE’S THE ONLY ONE SCHOOL WIDE WHO WOULD KNOW THAT.
In younger years, your response would have been “well duhhh”. Today, your almost speechless and left embracing the impact of your lessons, with tear in eye.
Lori,
That is awesome how your daughter has been rubbing off your passion for door hardware and safety. It is amazing how she just went and paraphrased a fire code.
That must have brought a tear to your eye…Good Job, Hardware Mom!!!
The apple didn’t fall far from the tree…. 🙂
My entire family is disgusted by my constant “inspection” of fire doors and assemblies in every public building we enter!!
…..I agree Lori!! It warmed my heart when my wife and kids would tell me where the closest exit was when we would go to a movie!!!!
And we worry about the younger generation.
I guess doors are not tested??
I received a call from my daughter late one Saturday night about a barricaded door at a nightclub. It was a side exit used as the ADA entrance and her friend could not get in with her wheelchair. She went right to the manager and called them out on putting everyone in danger.
Please welcome your daughter to a very special community.
I don’t think our kids could possibly escape their childhood without something rubbing off. 🙂

You have trained her well, Obi Wan.
That is awesome!!!! Love that something stuck! Maybe my kids will remember something that I’ve said over the years…..or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
She is minoring in Doorology/ NFPA 80????? Right?
Found this, Did you happen to run across him along the way??
Arthur B. Jordan passed away peacefully at the Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday evening. He was 81.
The son of the late Arthur and Geraldine (Dick) Jordan, Arthur was a graduate of Medford Vocational High School. Arthur served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 12 years. Before embarking on a long career in the automatic door industry, he was a performing magician and entertained family friends and groups with his talent. He continued to share some of his best tricks with his kids and grandchildren throughout the years. Arthur considered himself “the professor of door-ology”. He began his career working as a mechanic on automatic and revolving doors. Soon he advanced into sales, consultation, design and innovation of products within his industry. He also earned advanced certification in his field. Arthur was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and dear friend to many.
Actually, she is working on a double bachelor degree – a BA in psychology and a BS in child and family studies with a minor in Hispanic studies, but knowledge of fire doors is beneficial across all career paths. 🙂
And yes, I knew Art Jordan well. He was a wonderful man and always very helpful to me. The industry misses him.
