This may not be the kind of Wordless Wednesday photo that leaves YOU wordless but keep in mind that I am currently in Mexico where panic hardware is rare enough to be exciting, there are only two drive-thrus in town (and one is a drive-thru ATM), and I have been locked in my house since mid-March of 2020. I never even go to fast-food restaurants, but my youngest daughter needed a medical procedure last week and requested chicken nuggets for her bravery. (I’m sure some of you will remember when this same kid had a thyroidectomy 10 years ago!)
Anywhooo…it was nice to feel the familiar rush of discovery as I approached the drive-thru and saw the key-operated surface bolt in addition to the panic hardware, on a door with no closer and an engraved invitation for all of the field mice to come on in and help with crumb patrol. It’s the little things…

Hey Lori you are probably the best person to ask, I’ve ask the manufacturer. I have aproject in which the architect was directed us to install a Trimco 1209 stop basically 4″ of the wall and approximately 5-6″ away from the hinge edge of the door due to the door swinging into an overhead downspout. I suggested an overhead stop or even just changing the EDA arm on the closer to a S Cush type, but no luck. The manafacturer had no real placement requirements but realize the problem with the suggested location and it’s leverage the door would have and the stress that would be place on the hinge and frame because of it. Is the any real guideline other than to not be e a trip hazard that you know of?
I have always requested my guys to question the placement position if it was was less than 2/3 the width of the door to the stop.

I have never seen a specific measurement/guideline…it’s more of a judgement call whether the stop creates a tripping hazard. I would try to go with an S-Cush closer, or if it was early enough to make changes and the the opening was likely to get some abuse, I would use an overhead stop.
