Check out this Fixed-it Friday photo of a creative hinge modification, sent in by Andy Armstrong of BR Johnson. At least it doesn’t appear to be a fire door.

Would have thought it would be cheaper to buy them! Can’t deny the ingenuity, though.
The FF and WW posts always make me mutter out loud “Oh my God!” or “Holy S**t!”
Thank you, Lori!
Just a couple of hinge leafs welded to a 5-knuckle hinge. Even if heavy-duty, I doubt that the hinge was designed to carry the additional leverage of the offset. As an architect I’m not sure if actual products are available for situations like this. I’m thinking they would be better and cheaper if so. Can someone enlighten me?
Hi Dan –
Yes, there are wide throw hinges available that have wider hinge leaves exactly like what is pictured (without the welds). This installer just decided to make their own. There is a picture of one here: http://idighardware.com/2011/09/hinges-types-and-applications/
