Kelly Reese of Allegion sent me today’s Fixed-it Friday photo, and I have to admit, it’s pretty creative. Unfortunately, if this is a fire door the purpose of the fire door assembly has been completely defeated. For other hold-open options, refer to last week’s Fixed-it Friday post.

An argument could be made that it has a fusible link to release the hold open feature?
Yes! LOL
As an end user I like the simplicity.
As an EOC auditor I’m glad it’s not at my place.
I am speechless right now… two weeks in row. So this could also be trip hazard.
Hi Carol, the long cylinder can be shortened if wanted. Haha!
I’m with Peter on this one.
Not sure it meets ADA as well.
Well at least it’s not a block of wood ,and as stated before one might argure it may release in the event of a fire albeit close to te floor .
You are such a tease! Give us all the details to build this magnificent device. Is that a motor capacitor on the end of the lariot. That might give an that extra warning when it explodes to give the sight diminished/blind people a warning that the door has been released.
When I saw the photo my first thought was that hopefully it wasn’t designed by a high school kid in shop class because the next thing you know someone will be proposing legislation to make things like this acceptable for use on a fire door. What’s the difference between that and changing the codes to allow barricade devices, some of which have been made in shop class?

Are there any standards for hold-open closers with built-in smoke/heat detectors (that would auto-close in case of fire)? If such devices were available at reasonable prices, they could be simultaneously more convenient and safer than the ad-hoc approaches people use to overcome the inconvenience posed by having doors close automatically whether or not there’s a fire.
Hi John –
There are products available, and product standards, and code requirements, but I don’t think we could ever come to close to the price of a piece of pipe on a string. 🙁
