A few years ago, I shared a video of an automatic door being opened by birds – it really seemed like they were intentionally activating the motion sensor. Yesterday, Austin Bammann of Central Indiana Hardware sent me a link to a news video involving an automatic door, which reminded me of another one that I saw last week. Enjoy…
Is there a way to keep animals from activating automatic doors? I’d love to hear about your experience with this problem.

In smaller vestibule applications like this, a “knowing act” door, ANSI 156.19, whereby the power operator is activated by a press wall switch can eliminate this issue. I would question first if the device (e.g. frame mounted motion sensor) that the rodent was activating was used specifically for opening the door, or also as a presence safety device.
It can’t be easy to work a Bullwinkle reference into a code discussion blog–I’m wicked impressed!
Sometimes I’m struck by a flash of brilliance. Haha. 😀

I can think of a cattle grid for the moose, but the squirrel is a tough one.
