If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you probably remember that I often take my family on a long road trip during the summer, and work from various locations along the way (remember Chip Falcon’s Road Trip?). When I started iDigHardware, my oldest daughter was 7, and on this summer’s road trip we’re looking at colleges for her! EEEK!
I always find some amazing doors to share, and today I have SO MANY! We spent part of last week in Asheville, North Carolina, which is a really cool city. Lots of art, music, restaurants, breweries, and some great doors! Enjoy!
We saw a few code issues…
^This one (above) is either a mag-lock with a door-hardware release switch and an extra push button, or a sensor-release mag-lock that’s missing the sensor.
Pretty gates…
Big doors (and big pulls!)…
Beautiful and funky details…
And one of my favorite things…fabulous painted doors!

I hope you had a chance to tour Biltmore estates. I did 2 years ago and when we got to the 3rd floor I noticed an unusual item. This house was built in 1895 and had both AD and DC electrical power and had an elevator that they had seen at the 1892 Worlds Fair in Chicago. The Vanderbilt’s had also seen an number of NEW products at the fair and one that I spotted on a bathroom door. It was an original “beer pump” door closer. I talked the tour guide into calling someone to allow me to go up the 3 stairs into the bathroom so that I could be sure of what it appeared to be. It was in fact an original door closer. It worked perfectly and I was told that it was one of more than a dozen on the property that had been purchased when they were seen in Chicago.
Hi Bruce!
I did go to the Biltmore and I took some photos of these closers which I’ll share soon!

I just need to go on the record as saying that the gate with the White Tree emblem is fantastic. I want one some day, but preferably out of something that stays shiny outside (aluminum, perhaps) so it can look more like mithril.
Great photos Lori thanks for sharing. Asheville will always have a place in my heart Having lost a friend there back in 2005 . She was one of the first female locksmiths here in Toronto (before moving there) and enjoyed the city and all it had to offer . She often spoke of all the fantastic and different doors she would see
I feel the same way about Charleston…my stepfather died there in the Renaissance Hotel. The staff took such good care of us that I always try to stay in Marriott Hotels. And I love Charleston.
