Every so often a set of photos comes across my desk and I don’t know whether to laugh or cry (remember these?). The photos below left me speechless. I could have saved them for Wordless Wednesday since I have no words, but I couldn’t wait to share. Thank you to Michael Glasser of Kroll Advisory Solutions for sending them.

OK…I give up. What are they electrifying? The face of the door?
My guess is the exit alarms, although I would have assumed they were battery-operated. I’m still trying to figure out what happens when you push the doors open far enough to unplug the cords. The alarms stop sounding? I tried to get Michael to plug them in and find out but he doesn’t want to burn the building down. Party pooper. 😀
I think they are trying to electrify the exit devices, so the alarm will sound. Unless their idea of an alarm is the screams of people going up and touching an ELECTRIFIED DOOR!! Talk about access control….
How does one rim device lock against another rim device without a mullion? Look like a coordinator up on the head, so maybe the door on the right has auto flush bolts and that device is nothing but an alarm.
I think the coordinator went along with whatever hardware was there before. I just added a close-up of the alarms and you can see that there was a lock before. The devices are offset with some sort of funky strike configuration.
My guess is that the outlets in the doors are jumped on the back of the device, and when the end of the cords are plugged in it completes the circuit, that circuit would hold open a relay that when the circuit is broken the relay spring close and sound the audio device that is the “alarm”
They could have used some low or line voltage (properly enclosed) switches with push button it would be safer sin there could be 110v on the prongs of the plugs for someone to get zapped on.
Yikes! After a few seconds, I noticed the electric outlet/receptacle plates on the doors. Thank goodness for the reinforcing chains attached to the wires running from the junction box. I think it’s a new NEC requirement so that when the doors are opened, the chains will keep the wires from being stretched and they will not get ripped off- they will simply unplug! Pure genius, I say!

Personnally, I like the chain crash stops hanging down. I think the plug ins are low voltage wire loops to keep alarm from sounding. We have similar exposed low voltage wires crisscrossed and attached to the panels on our roll up warehouse doors. You plug the system up when setting the alarm for the night. Surface mag switches would have been much easier, but nowhere near as cool looking.
Who in the world would think leaving hot leads hanging in the air is ever an option with anything? That’s one of the most dangerous openings I have seen yet.
Heck they even went with a 20 amp plug, I guess 15 amp wasnt going to cut it…God I love this haha
How does this configuration work? I mean usually you have to have something that latches into the frame and/or floor to hold one or both leafs in the latched position. This configuration just latches one leaf to the other. If there isn’t a bolt somewhere you can just push on the face of the door and open it. You wouldn’t need to push the exit bar at all.
I have no idea. Maybe Michael will give in to the peer pressure and investigate further. The building probably won’t burn down if he plugs them in…right?
