It seems like I’ve been reading revisions to the 2027 I-Codes for at least 3 years – because I have!  The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) Codes, Government, and Industry Affairs (CGIA) Committee has been working on these editions since very early in 2024, just as we have done during each cycle for previous editions.

The committee is currently working on code change proposals for the 2030 editions, which are due in January of 2027, so if you have any suggestions – leave a comment!  And just in time for us to have the new language to base our changes on, the 2027 editions of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC) are available!  I just downloaded my PDFs, and as a bonus, I received both the 2027 edition and the “red line” edition, which shows the new changes based on font color.

Check out the 2027 editions to see important changes like the new section addressing control vestibules (AKA interlocks) and the revision requiring school doors to be lockable from the inside.  You can read about these changes in this Decoded article:  Looking Ahead to the 2027 I-Codes.

As an added bonus, the 2026 edition of ICC A117.1 – Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities is also available.  It has been 9 years since the last edition of this standard was published, and the 2026 edition is referenced in the 2027 I-Codes.

Some changes are actually clarifications can be incorporated immediately to help understand the intent of the codes and interpret them properly, so don’t wait!  Let me know what stands out to you, and we’ll discuss!
