During the pandemic, I trained 3,300 people with live webinars from my tiny home office, and I was amazed at how well I was able to reach attendees far and wide.  Since then, the recordings of those webinars have been viewed thousands of times.  For me, this has nothing to do with racking up views as an “influencer” or the marketing opportunities associated with the impressions.  What excites me is knowing that thousands of people had their questions answered and learned something that helps them in their daily work – not to mention the impact on the safety of building occupants.

I’ve had an idea for a long time…I wanted to make a series of short videos talking about a particular code topic that could be collected into a library on iDigHardware.  At any time in the future, if someone has a question about a particular topic related to swinging doors, they can access a 15-20 minute video, see what the code says, and hear me explain the intent.  I wish I had been able to get this kind of information when I started in the industry (we didn’t have internet access back then)!

The idea turned into a series of live sessions on electrified hardware, at least as a starting point.  Maybe I’ll continue to do short videos until there’s nothing else to talk about (I take requests! :)).  But the initial sessions will each cover a topic related to electrified hardware, as those are the code requirements that I get the most questions about.

The first session began with a short presentation covering access control systems that allow free egress (normal locking arrangements), and the UL 294 and UL 1034 listings that are required for special locking arrangements.  Then my special guests and coworkers, Mark Kuhn and Matthew Phillips (with the support of our amazing moderators!), helped me answer questions that we received when attendees registered, as well as questions that were sent via the chat during the session.  Live questions that we didn’t get to were answered in the Q&A transcript or individually by email.

The recordings from the first session are now available, along with supporting resources on the topic.  The second session is scheduled for September 15th, and the topic is Sensor Release and Door Hardware Release of Electrically Locked Egress Doors.  The model codes include two sections that address these applications, and there is a lot of confusion about when and where to apply them.  You can register for Session 2 here!
