On a recent field trip with the members of Allegion’s Early Careers Program, I saw a fantastic example of a secure entry vestibule in a high school. After entering the vestibule from the exterior, visitors must check in with Security before being allowed to proceed through the interior doors into the school (or not). Although this type of vestibule is sometimes incorrectly called a “man-trap”, it does not function like a sallyport or interlock because it allows free egress through the exterior doors at all times. These vestibules play a very important role in limiting unauthorized access to school buildings.

Looks great, but there are a couple of questions/issues: 1) Noted a card reader on the exterior doors but not on the lobby doors. How does that work for staff? 2) Would not put handles on both doors of a pair (think Virginia Tech). 3) Would not place a card reader on the same door that others use. Would move card control to furthest door on both exterior and interior to better prevent piggy backing. Suggest plants or low glazed wall partition in vestibule to further reduce crossover behavior. 4) Why are there removable mullions on all the doors? I like movable mullions but single openings or fixed mullions are better. I will bet that every door pair in the building has movable mulions… most of which will never be used. A loading dock or door would resolve this problem. 5) Are the 99s equipped with LPS? If not, they should be. Also, if there is an LPS feature, the surface door switch does not appear to be adjustable, allowing the door to close, but not latch. 6) Are the other doors (interior and exterior) equipped with LPS and electric controls? If not, they should be… at least latch position and door switches. 7) there is a lot of glass in this area… good CPTED stuff, but bad for active shooter protection. Personally, I would rather have the glass. 7) What kind of glazing is used here? Would prefer SchoolGuard or something similar. I have more… quite a few more, in fact. Not all related to the physicl security items in the Vestibule.
