It has been almost 3 weeks since the apartment fire in the Bronx that resulted in 17 fatalities when at least two open doors allowed smoke to spread. Earlier this week, an I-Team report from News 4 New York described the condition of fire doors in other Bronx apartment buildings.
After the I-Team investigation, the landlord repaired fire door problems in their apartment buildings, including doors to stairwells, trash rooms, and apartments that were not self-closing. Here is a follow-up story from News 4.

About 50 seconds into the follow-up story, they show what appears to be a non-latching double-acting door. How is this allowed?
I saw that too! I don’t know of any listed fire doors like that.

What are the fire inspectors looking at? Are they seeing these issues and just letting them go?
I don’t think anyone is really paying full attention to these doors in most jurisdictions.

Just as Healthcare is mandated/required to inspect and maintain fire doors annually so should all other occupancies as defined in the Life Safety Code.

It’s about time that this happens. However it’s also a fault of the inspector for not following up. Heavy fines should be involved.
