Jen Boggs of Mulhaupt’s sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photo, taken in a small toy store. I know that egress problems in retail stores are not uncommon, but this one has me shaking my head. #wordless

At least the “EXIT” sign is green !
But “the wheels on the (display fixture) bus go round and round” and ‘anyone’ would know to just roll it away from the door ….
Just unbelievable. These people have no clue.
As someone who did Retail Design for 20 years, i can attest that this is an area in the Code book that needs attention. Retail outlets (justifiably) have to have exits but without the ability to constantly monitor who can exit through those doors, they are at the mercy of thieves. a perfect example is what happened the other day at the Nordstrom’s in San Francisco, 80 people pulled a mass theft and there was no way for store security to stop the situation in progress.
Hi Joseph –
I can understand the security problems associated with free egress, but maybe delayed egress locks would help?
