Today’s Wordless Wednesday photo was sent to me by Shane Meier of NMC Health, who made an interesting point: “Before I joined NMC Health as the facilities director, I spent 27 years in retail, the last 17 as a store manager for a large retailer. I received a lot of education on managing the P&L and controlling theft, and it was made clear – your job was on the line if you had two bad inventories in a row, but I don’t ever recall any training as it related to Life Safety. Maybe retail needs to re-evaluate their priorities.”
I couldn’t agree more.
There is an exit sign above these doors…it’s just not shown in the photo.

Now would be a good time to call the local fire marshal.
If the local authority would hire and train an employee to do nothing but inspect retail stores for situations like this, with a minimum fine for the first problem and growing from there. People would learn pretty quickly but the employee would never be out of work as there is always another store and some of the fine could be used to cover the salary of the employee. Plus many of the original stores would do it wrong again and and need another inspection and fine. Sounds easy but they can make it hard all the way through.
Good idea!

I see this all too often. Who’s responsibility is it to tell the store manager that this is a life safety issue?
Too funny Lori!!! You are definitely a door guru. So much so, that you didn’t even notice the guy scratching his butt on the way out.
You’re right! I guess I should be looking more closely to avoid accidentally posting something X-rated! 🙂

Came here to say this. Was Beat to it.
This is an issue in over 90% of the Retail Stores, from Mom and Pops to the Big Boxes. I see where they block the Break-out Side-lites on Automatic Sliders, just to fill the Space Between the Sliders with the product, to baring the emergency exit doors. When you report this to the Managers, they tell you this is corporate design and there is nothing they can do about it. The Fire Inspectors don’t do anything about it until there is an incident, but they are never fined, shut down for these actions. Only the Mom and Pop stores will listen as they do not have the money to protest.
Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Target, and the Other Big Box Stores don’t even pay property or remit sales taxes for the vast majority of their stores, as part of the negotiations with the local and state governments when they plan and build the stores. Employing hundreds of people, gets them into the tax-free business….
