Last week I posted about the 30th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and I realized how many people were unaware of how the law began and the work that was done to get it passed. A large percentage of people who are currently working in the door and hardware industry began their careers when the ADA was already in place…another set of standards for us to follow.
Ken Cook of Allegion sent me a link to a podcast that talks about the legislative efforts of Former Senator Tom Harkin and others who were the original proponents of the law. I found it really interesting to hear that the ADA passed 91/6 in the Senate and 377/28 in the House – a truly bipartisan piece of legislation.
The podcast series is called Our American States, and it’s a production of the National Council of State Legislators (NCSL). The episode is called: The ADA at 30: A Conversation With Former Senator Tom Harkin. You can find the link to the 20-minute podcast here, and if you’d rather read the transcript of the podcast, it’s here.
I also have a question for you. Are there other podcasts you listen to that are related to codes, doors, or something else related to this site? I’d love to share them

Lori,
I think a door and hardware related podcast would be a great idea. I would be happy to help if there are others that would be interested in working together on it.
