Jason Becker of the Trimble Company of Virginia sent me the Wordless Wednesday photo below, taken at a convention center. ALL of the banks of doors are equipped with this hardware. According to the convention center’s website, they have 502,000 square feet of exhibit space, 80 meeting rooms, and a 28,000 square foot ballroom. I need to make an avatar of me crying, to include with these posts.

Why?!? If these doors are exit only, there shouldn’t be a need to bolt them from the inside if there’s no outside lever. It’s hard to tell but at least it kind of looks like the bolts aren’t thrown. Either way this is a real head scratcher.
Nice
Private or government facility??
Just trying to prevent reentry !!!!
So the bigger question:
Does the actuator go half the width of the door?
Love the slide latch bolts!!!
The bolts just make it easier for someone to leave the door unlatched so a buddy can sneak in! Obviously they don’t care about egress, so unauthorized ingress shouldn’t be a problem either.
You’ve heard me say it before. If I were the inspector, I would shut them down, saying that there would be no occupancy by the public at all until this is remedied. I don’t care what you have scheduled, you are closed.
This is the future if NFPA passes the 2 operation releasing code. I shudder to think whats next.
and this could be allowed under the proposed “2 actions to operate a means of egress” … if stretched a bit
I’ve seen these doors and had the same reaction!
All this great talk back and forth did anybody alert the State Fire Marshal?
Vonnegut, DuPont and Prinzler are rolling over in their graves.
