For the last 8 years, I have coordinated a holiday gift drive along with my coworkers, family, and friends for the residents of our local family shelter and other families in need. This year we provided gifts for 75 kids and parents! When I went to the shelter with a load to drop off, I saw the sign below. I asked the director if they had a close call and she said, with a very grave look in her eyes, “more than one.”
The door closer wasn’t providing enough force to close and latch the door, so rather than messing around with the existing one, I immediately ordered a replacement from LCN (thank you to Rich Conroy and Harris Parsons from SSC-New England!). If the panic device becomes a problem, I’ll get a new Von Duprin 99 for them. This is not a facility with money to spare. They make do. But I can’t in good conscience let a sign be their method of providing security and safety for their residents – especially the new walkers who see the slightly-open door as their chance to “elope.”
Where will you make a difference this holiday season?
And speaking of the holidays, check out this very creative holiday video from Margulies Perruzzi Architects. One of our specwriters recently completed Boston’s new Tea Party Museum with them, and I hope to post some photos soon. There were some interesting egress situations and I know how much you love them. 🙂

Hello Lori,
its great that you donate to this shelter, and was able to help them have a safer door (and a new closer) what series are you getting for them?? 4040XP??
the closer that’s on this door now is not an IR product, as with any closer, depending on air pressure inside the building, it may be necessary to wind the spring up a little more to make sure it will close all the way and don’t forget to adjust the regulation valves so the door don’t slam on any little fingers.
this morning I was greeted with a closer question that was asked on flickr, youtube, then a friend who owns a website that talks about closers emails me, and in my yahoo mail, all from the same guy with same closer problem, a traditional LCN on an old church that slams.
happy holidays to you and your family,
-Jess the door closer doctor
Thanks Jess. I’ll make sure it’s adjusted properly after it’s installed. It’s a 4111-Cush.
And the greatest gift you gave this year is much needed door hardware. You are a good person! Happy Holidays!
Best wishes to you and your family, and much success in the coming year!
Thanks Mike!
