Continuing with my “What’s that?” series highlighting pieces and parts that might not be recognized by those who haven’t spent 30 or 40 years in the world of hardware…Hal Kelton of DOORDATA Solutions sent me these photos of a mullion stabilizer. Note: These photos also feature the strike hook that was the topic of another post in the series. (If you have more photos to share, send them along!)
So what’s a mullion stabilizer? They are designed to be installed with a removable mullion, which is used with a pair of doors equipped with rim panic hardware. The removable mullion sits behind the meeting stiles of the doors, providing a place to mount the strike for the panic hardware. You can see a removable mullion in action in this video.
Mullion stabilizers are used for added security, when there is a potential for deflection of the mullion; this can especially occur with aluminum mullions. In Hal’s photos, the two pieces of the mullion stabilizer set are the aluminum-colored pieces (not the black ones). Here is what the Von Duprin catalog says about mullion stabilizers:
